2nd Place for Vera Looser & Alexis Skarda at Cape Epic 2025
Lapierre athlete Vera Looser delivered yet another impressive performance at the Absa Cape Epic 2025 in South Africa! Racing for Team Efficient Infiniti SCB SRAM, she tackled the toughest MTB stage race alongside Alexis Skarda. Both riders are experienced competitors, and for Vera, this was already her fifth Cape Epic!
It's called "The Untamed Race" for a reason.
Over 8 grueling stages, the athletes covered 608 km with 16,500 meters of climbing. Africa showed its wildest side, throwing every possible weather challenge at them. The first stages were defined by extreme heat and strong winds, only for the weather to shift suddenly to rain and deep mud. Beyond battling the elements, the riders also faced the world’s best in the fight for podium spots. Vera and Alexis had to go head-to-head with the dominant Toyota-Specialized duo, Annika Langvad and Sophia Gomez Villafane—and at times, they managed to hold their ground.

The perfect bike for the Challenge
The Lapierre XRM proved to be the ideal companion for the demanding terrain of the Cape Epic. Designed for long distances, steep climbs, and rolling landscapes, this full-suspension bike is a testament to Lapierre’s expertise in endurance racing. With a 120mm travel that absorbs shocks without compromising performance, the XRM ensures efficient power transfer, even after hours of intense riding. The bike’s versatile carbon frame features enhanced suspension, making it perfect for rugged trails and multi-hour marathon races. The XRM provides the necessary control for technical and steep descents, helping riders like Vera push their limits in extreme conditions.

Team Spirit is EVERYTHING
Despite the intense challenges, Vera had a small but incredibly dedicated support team around her—people she could fully rely on! With a tight-knit crew, many took on multiple roles—for example, the team chef was also responsible for post-stage massages. Everyone was highly motivated, and their routines were perfectly coordinated.
A key factor in their performance was not just a great team but also nutrition and recovery. The riders followed a strict diet, avoiding foods that are harder to digest, like salads, and sticking to rice, chicken, and fish to prevent stomach issues. They also prioritized early bedtimes to maximize recovery and sustain peak performance throughout the race.

Pushing Forward...
As the race wore on, fatigue set in, and every pedal stroke demanded more mental strength. Yet, despite the pain, Vera recalls many incredible moments. The strong partnership with Alexis, the mutual support, and their ability to push through frustration together boosted their team spirit immensely. As Vera puts it: “Suffering together makes it easier and more bearable.”
For her, this week was tough, but absolutely amazing—an experience she’d do again in a heartbeat.
We’re incredibly proud of Vera’s outstanding performance and honored to have her as part of the Lapierre team!
